Background to this Research being taken up at a global scale
Mercury is heavy shiny liquid metal that breaks into smaller droplets and has a property of attaching itself to certain type of materials. During this reaction it forms certain inorganic salts and compounds. This mercury based inorganic salts present are in soil and they also gets washed away in water and at room temperature, they evaporate into colourless and odourless toxic vapours.
Mercury undergoes a constant transformation from air to water to solid in soil during which a series of complex chemical and physical transformations happen and this is not fully understood by the scientists in world today.
Mercury when it combines with microorganisms, it forms an organic compound called methyl mercury, the most prevalent and the first entry point into the food chain.
The above was the story of what used to happen in case of mercury about a 50-150 years back.
But ever since industrialization started peaking and the age of information technology and mobile computing picked up momentum, a new dimension of how mercury reacts and what toxins it gives out is now being studied observed by World Economic Confederation.
There is 2 mg of mercury in every mobile phone, there are 5.5 billion use mobile phones. So you can imagine the mega spurt in the mercury usage.
When digital devices and components are used, the mercury in these equipment, starts emitting certain type of toxic ions which not only hurt planet earth but also human beings.
World Economic Confederation’s initial study indicated a massive impact on planet earth, human race and the global economy.
World Economic Confederation’s global outlook or going a step further, World Economic Confederation’s predictions are:
- Global economy will significantly slow down due to effect of the toxic ions emitted mercury usage in digital devices and components.
- The toxic ions from the usage of mercury will impact the human beings by making them less humane, their moral and mental state of mind becomes more negative, they will become impatient, less compassionate and confrontational.
- These toxic ions from usage of mercury make planet earth a hotter place attracting more conflicts and it becomes less favorable for vibrant economic activity across nations.
- Unabated usage of mercury will also result in communication technologies interfering in many trusted systems which will start malfunctioning resulting in chaos.
- If steps are not taken by leaders or responsible seniors and citizens in their respective geographies this could result events like the following unfolding says World Economic Confederation,
- A generation of people who are impatient, lack empathy and are more confrontational as against the usually very lovable being that human beings are
- A series of conflicts then wars cropping up that could lead to the war involving more nations.
- Significant slowing down of the global economy
- Lack of trust on several trusted systems leading to chaos
The main losers will be the small businessman and small businesses which form the heart and main-stream income and employment generator across the nook and corner of any country.
Unabated usage of mercury will also result in communication technologies interfering in many trusted systems causing them to malfunction, resulting in chaos and loss of trust on trusted systems.
World Economic Confederation says that “Given that a future without digital devices atleast the mobile phones is impossible to imagine”, what is feasible is to work on finding solutions to build a future where the use of mercury on digital devices is eliminated and how digital devices and atleast the mobile phones of future are made without harmful effects on Mother Earth and Human Being.
This is easily possible if world leaders or atleast leaders and responsible respectable seniors at every smaller area/geographic unit start taking up this matter seriously for effective policy making to further creatively finding solutions to address the ill effects of toxic ions from mercury usage in digital devices mainly the mobile phone.
Effectively handling the mercury waste on planet earth.
Eliminate if possible, the use of mercury in digital devices especially mobile phones and if not possible, at least eliminate the impact of mercury on digital devices specially mobile phones and gadgets that are regularly used by Human Being.
World Economic Confederation, to help in effective policy making by leaders who the World Economic Confederation urges to take this matter seriously fast for discussions to find the creative solutions to this mercury led twin problems and make this Planet Earth a Happy and Great place for us and our future generations to live is undertaking various research and studies.
Research
World Economic Confederation has undertaken research under the leadership of several scientists, other eminent persons from various domains to study the impact of mercury used in modern day equipment on (a) the planet earth (b) the global economy and (c) the human race.
Amidst the background that overall usage of Mercury has significantly gone up in the world in the last century and coupled with climate change has already started impacting planet earth in a negative manner.
Most important part of this will the understanding of the impact of the emission of toxic ions from the usage of Mercury on the modern electronic devices and equipment on human beings, economy and planet earth as this is yet to be understood at great depth.
Though mercury is prevalent in its elemental form in the core of the planet earth, at room temperature it is in liquid form but gets into pores of the earth, resulting in pollution and changing the nature of the soil of the planet earth. This increase in mercury usage coupled with several factors is alarming and is at various stages of alarm in differing levels in different parts of the earth.
The same mercury upon being heated it becomes a colourless odourless vapour that is hugely toxic and easily absorbed by living organisms and specially human body. Once this enters a human body from water or other as vapour then, the impact microorganisms that would have had mercury infester , what all can do is evident from the changes to human behaviour observed in the last two decades.
World Economic Confederation’s primary objective is to study the impact of mercury across countries and its population and how to prevent and eliminate or drastically reduce dependence on mercury.
